The Service
Block-paved drives in Ayrshire face the worst of it — coastal rain, salt-laden air, tyre rubber, oil drips, leaf mulch, and the inevitable creeping black biofilm. Left alone, a drive that was a feature when it was laid becomes the worst-looking thing about your kerb appeal in 5-7 years.
Our driveway cleaning service is built specifically for block paving, with the right kit and the right after-treatment. Hot-water rotary surface cleaner at 150-180 bar removes the black tide line without firing block-jointing sand across the lawn. Then we re-sand the joints — properly, with kiln-dried sand, swept and vibrated in.
The result is a drive that looks newly laid and stays that way. With an optional impregnating sealer applied after cleaning, you get 3-4 years of protection from re-staining and stops weeds rooting in the joints.
Why It Matters
Block paving is forgiving — until it isn't. Here's the progression we see when drives are left for years.
Without sand in the joints, blocks lose lateral support. Within a few years the surface goes wavy and individual blocks rock under tyres.
Dandelion and thistle roots in joints can lift adjacent blocks. Pulling them often takes blocks with them.
Hot tyre marks and oil drips bond to dirty block surfaces. Cleaned annually they wipe off — left for 5 years they're often there for life.
Estate agents consistently cite drive condition as a top-5 first-impression factor. A grim drive can knock 1-2% off a sale price.
Our Process
01
Send a photo with a tape measure in shot or we'll pop round — fixed quote by m².
02
Surface biocide applied to kill algae and lichen. 10-15 minutes dwell time before any pressure goes on.
03
150-180 bar rotary surface cleaner with hot water — even pass across the whole drive, no banding.
04
Kiln-dried jointing sand brushed and vibrated into every joint until level. Dry surface needed — usually next-day if work is in cooler weather.
05
Solvent or water-based impregnating sealer applied (if booked) for 3-4 years of stain and weed resistance.

In Detail
Different drive surfaces need different methods. Here's what we do across the most common Ayrshire driveway types.
150-180 bar rotary, 65-80°C water, biocide pre-treatment, kiln-dried sand re-jointed. Optional polymeric sand for high-traffic drives — sets like grout, locks every block. Optional impregnating sealer for 3-4 year protection.
Surface cleaner only at low pressure — never close-up lance work which damages the binder and pulls aggregate loose. Optional tarmac-restorer black-up product to refresh faded surfaces and add UV protection.
Hot-water rotary clean with appropriate pressure for the surface condition. Imprinted concrete almost always benefits from re-sealing after cleaning, as the original sealer fades and the colour goes flat without it.
We don't pressure wash gravel — we re-rake, top up where needed, and treat with residual weed killer if requested. Often paired with a new edging install to stop migration.
Soft brush wash with neutral pH cleaner — never rotary, never hot. Resin can be damaged by aggressive cleaning. Most resin drives only need an annual gentle clean.
Pre-treatment with degreaser, dwell time, agitation, then rotary clean. Old set-in stains may need 2 cycles. We're honest about what's recoverable and what isn't.
Solvent-based impregnating sealer (clear, no shine) or wet-look sealer (deepens colour). Both extend life, both resist oil and weed regrowth. Quoted as an add-on, typically £4-£6/m² on top of the clean.
Commercial car parks, forecourts and trade premises on quoted maintenance programmes. RAMS, out-of-hours work and traffic management organised as needed.
