The Service

Artificial Grass That Looks Real After 5 Years

The difference between an artificial lawn that still looks great after five years and one that's flat, lifted at the edges and full of moss isn't the grass — it's what's under it. Cheap installs are rolled over compacted soil with a thin membrane and pinned at the edges. Within 18 months the surface dips, water pools, joins lift and weeds push through.

We install full-system: excavate 75-100mm, lay Type 1 hardcore compacted in layers, screened granite dust to a perfect plane, woven weed membrane, then premium UK-spec grass with hidden joins glued (not taped) on jointing tape, kiln-dried sand infilled and brushed for an upright pile.

It's the right choice for shaded gardens where a real lawn struggles, families with dogs and children who want a usable garden 12 months a year, busy professionals who don't want a maintenance commitment, and ground-floor flats with overlooked patches. We'll always tell you straight if real turf is the better answer for your space.

Why It Matters

The Real Cost of a Cheap Install

Most artificial grass complaints aren't about the grass — they're about the install. Here's what goes wrong, and what it costs to put right.

Pile flattens & shines

Without proper kiln-dried sand infill, the pile lies flat and reflects sunlight. The 'plastic shine' look comes from skipping the infill stage.

Visible joins after one summer

Taped joins peel apart when the adhesive heats and contracts. We glue every join — they should be invisible at 1m and stay that way.

Pooling, smell & moss

Without a draining sub-base, urine and rainwater sit on the surface. Within 6 months you've got moss, smell and a black tide line at the edges.

Edges curl & lift

Pinned-only edges lift in winter when the ground heaves. We secure with treated timber edging or block-paved restraint.

Our Process

How We Deliver Artificial Grass in Ayrshire

  1. 01

    Site Visit & Spec

We measure, check existing drainage and soil, and talk through grass options (pile, colour, pet-spec) so you pick the right product.

  2. 02

    Excavate & Edge

75-100mm dug out, treated timber edging or paving restraint installed to a string line.

  3. 03

    Build Sub-Base

Type 1 MOT compacted in 50mm layers, then screened granite dust laid to a perfect plane with a slight fall for drainage.

  4. 04

    Lay Membrane & Grass

Heavy-duty weed membrane, then grass rolled and acclimatised before cutting. Every join glued on jointing tape — never taped.

  5. 05

    Infill, Brush & Hand Over

Kiln-dried sand infilled (or zeo-infill for pets) at the correct rate, power-brushed to lift the pile. You walk on it the same day.

In Detail

Artificial Grass — Specifications We Use

Most installers are vague about what's actually going under the grass. Here's exactly what's in our standard system — and the options for tougher conditions.

Sub-base build-up

Standard residential: 75mm excavation, 50mm Type 1 MOT compacted in two layers, 25mm screened granite dust laid to a 1:80 fall. Heavy use / pet runs: 100mm excavation with 75mm Type 1. We never lay artificial grass directly onto soil or onto an existing lawn.

Grass specifications

We carry three core specs: a 35mm 4-tone family grass (best all-rounder, soft underfoot), a 40mm luxury pile (premium look, garden showpiece), and a 30mm short-pile pet/play grass (more durable, easier to brush). All UV-stable, all 10-year guaranteed.

Edging & restraint

Treated softwood timber edging on stainless steel pins for soft-edge gardens; existing paving, decking or block-paving used as restraint where present. We don't pin into the lawn surface — every edge has a structural restraint.

Joins & seaming

Joins are made with polyurethane adhesive on a 300mm jointing tape, pile direction matched and weighted overnight. Stand on a properly made join in 12 months and you shouldn't be able to feel it.

Drainage

Standard backing is permeable and drains at >60L/m²/min — more than any real rainfall. On heavy clay sites we install a perimeter or central drain into a soakaway as part of the sub-base. Quoted up front if needed.

Pet & playground variants

For dog owners we recommend a shorter pile and zeo-infill (neutralises ammonia, not just masks it). For play areas we can supply a shockpad layer underneath for fall-height compliance up to 1.5m.

Residential vs commercial

We install artificial grass for holiday lets, pubs, nurseries and care homes across Ayrshire. Commercial installs include a written maintenance schedule and an annual brush-and-infill service available on contract.
